SINISA LEAVES

Serbian national team manager Siniša Mihajlović has decided to leave his role and join Italian club Sampdoria. The 44-year-old has been in charge of the national team for the last 18 months, but he has now made the return to club football. Sampdoria recently sacked their manager and since then Mihajlović has been constantly linked with them.

Mihajlović is one of the best players for Sampdoria after having made more than 100 appearances for the club during his playing days. This return marks a fourth spell in the Italian Serie A for Mihajlović.

Sampdoria will not have to pay a lot of compensation for Mihajlović since his contract with the Serbian national team was about to end in a few weeks. Serbia’s recent form has been excellent under the manager, but it is not known who will be in charge of the team when they take on the Republic of Ireland in March. Serbia are undefeated in the last five matches of all competitions and this includes the recent 1-1 draw with Russia in a friendly match.

“In recent days questions were raised over my future, because my contract was due to expire at the end of the month. After talks with the federation I decided that I will no longer be the coach of Serbia. I make this decision with much regret, because I set up a new generation and a new team for Serbia who have bright prospects. I accepted the invitation from Sampdoria, where I played for four years,” Mihajlovic told reporters after announcing the move.

Sampdoria, meanwhile, are struggling in the league after 12 matches. They have managed just two wins during this period, which has seen them sit just a few points above the bottom of the table. Mihajlović was a player at Sampdoria for four years.
