Branislav Ivanovic claims that he may receive a new contract

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic claims that he may receive a new contract from Chelsea after seeing his performances in the last few weeks.

The Serbian is out of contract at the end of the campaign and his poor start to the season raised doubts as to whether Chelsea would extend his stay at the club. Despite his poor form, former manager Jose Mourinho persisted with him and this led to a lot of displeasure amongst fans. Ivanovic appears to have put the bad run of form behind him to even think about staying at Chelsea beyond the summer.

Ivanovic has been one of the longest serving players in this current Chelsea team after having been at the club since 2008. This is likely to be of great importance going forward since the number of other players like Eden Hazard and Oscar are fairly new to the club. Ivanovic is one of the few players capable of taking over the captain’s armband from John Terry when he eventually retires from football. At 31 years of age, however, he comes under the category of older players according to the club. Hence, he is unlikely to be offered a contract worth more than 12 months. It remains to be seen if Ivanovic will accept this offer or move elsewhere to get a longer contract.

“I know I didn’t start the season well but I am back.I hope the results will be good for the team. In that case I will be good as well. I hope and I think we will have time to speak about my future. Honestly, I am so happy [here],” said the Serbian defender, who was signed by the club for £ 9 million. He used amongst other few Serbian players to have succeeded in the English Premier League.
