QATAR 2022: MITROVIC LEADS SCORING STATS

Fulham striker AleksandarMitrovic is the unlikely topscorer after three rounds of games at the start of the qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup in the European section.

Mitrovic scored five goals in three games for Serbia to emerge as the leading goalscorer ahead of big names like Juventus talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, Inter Milan striker RomeluLukaku and Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski.

Serbia striker Mitrovichas one more goal than nearest challenger Burak Yilmaz of Turkey. Lille striker Yilmaz scored four goals for the Turkish national team in the first three games of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the UEFA section.

As many as 11 players are on three goals each after the first three games of the qualifiers including the aforementioned Lewandowski of the Poland national team. Others include Czech Republic midfielder Tomas Soucek, Scotland national team talisman John McGinn and Finland national team hitman TeemuPukki.

SasaKalajdzic (Austria national team player of Serbian descent), Henri Anier (Estonia), Diogo Jota (Portugal), AleksandarTrajkovski (North Macedonia), ArtemDzyuba (Russia), StevanJovetic (Montenegro) and Luuk de Jong (Netherlands) are also on three goals.

Fulham striker Mitrovicstarted the qualifiers with two goals in the win at home to the Republic of Ireland in Group A. He was the hero for Serbia after his brace propelled the team to a 3-2 win over their opponents. The Serbia striker then scored one of the goals in the 2-2 home draw with top seed Portugal. Serbia came from two goals down to earn a point in that game.

In the third and final qualifier till date for Serbia, Mitrovic scored twice in a 2-1 away win over Azerbaijan. With his five goals, Mitrovichas been able to propel his country to second place on the group standings. Serbia are in second spot by virtue of an inferior goal difference to Portugal with the two countries on seven points after three rounds of games. Portugal has +3 goal difference, while Serbia has +2 goal difference.
